The Hessian state archive Darmstadt has arisen from the office registration furnished in the 16th century of the county Hesse-Darmstadt which developed to the court archive and state archive of the Grand Duchy Hessen. Since 1725 it was accommodated in the former residence castle of the landgraves and Grand Dukes in Darmstadt.
With the change of the forms of government it became after 1918 the “Hessian state archive” of the national state Hessen. The castle was hard met – like the whole Darmstadt city centre – with the bombardment of Darmstadt in September, 1944 and suffered considerable losses. In the course of the foundation of the federal state Hessen the archive became in 1946 a regional state archive for the area of the governmental district Darmstadt. Im Zuge der Gründung des Bundeslandes Hessen wurde das Archiv 1946 regionales Staatsarchiv für den Bereich des Regierungsbezirks Darmstadt.
